Sixteen year old Lexis Corbin, a junior at Chautauqua Lake High School recently had the opportunity to compete in the National Snowboarding Championships in Colorado. Corbin spent three days racing the great slalom in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where she won the National Championship in her age group (15-16 female). Hers was the fastest female time in women overall at this event.

Her next Nationals race took her to Copper Mountain, Colorado where she practice for a week before the competition. Nathan Parks, a National Bordercross Champion and a professional snowboarding coach at Vail coached her during that week. This BX course was 4 times as long as the courses that Lexis was used to and the conditions of the course were very different. The degree of difficulty was greater here and the training she recieved also helped her get used to the altitude. Corbin's board needed to be adjusted with different sharpening and waxing due to the powdery and different conditions at this course.

At Copper Mountain Lexis's biggest competition in her age group was the defending champion from Vermont. Lexis finished 3rd in the boarder cross trials on April 6th. The top 24 out of 34 boarders advanced. In the next elimination, Lexis made it until she was one of the final six competitors. On the final heat, she placed first and became the Youth Womens USASA National BX Champion. She beat last years National Champion.

Her family and the Chautauqua Lake community are very proud of her. She worked very hard, practiced for many hours and has been very determined to get to this point. She will continue racing with her next race scheduled at Copper Mountain in November.
