A glass of wine, a loaf of bread, a game of chess with a view of the Village Park! The Westfield Chess Club meets every Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm at Sapore Wine Bar to share a game or two with friends, neighbors, and new friends they haven’t met yet.
On a typical Wednesday, you will find three or four chessboards spread out with players from Westfield, Chautauqua, and the surrounding area enjoying a delicious dinner, an espresso, a glass of Pinot Noir, and a good game with friends. For the picturesque village of Westfield, the forming of the Westfield Chess Club in January of 2009, has made it easier to enjoy an evening of chess after work or while on vacation.
The chess players have a classic “Currier and Ives” snow-capped view of the village through the winter as they sip their coffee, watch the daffodils bloom in the spring, sit outside once or twice to enjoy a glass of micro brew beer and a cigar in Chautauqua County’s idyllic summer weather, and hopefully, won’t be too distracted by the annual multihued fall foliage spectacle and the grape harvest.
Charles Ferraro, the club President and Founder said that he has thoroughly enjoyed the process of getting a chess club started. Though he sometimes refers to the old adage that “organizing chess players is like herding cats”, what struck him most was “the sprit of the chess people involved: Good-heartedness and generosity, lessons willingly and thoughtfully given to new players, and a love of the game”.
Everyone is welcome. Chess players from beginners to expert level tournament players will find a match. The club’s intent is to encourage people to play chess, to play well, and to extend its members’ enjoyment of the game. Membership is free and open to anyone over the age of six.
