So this year's Fathers Day official marks the beginning of summer since it coincides with the Summer Solstice. Really?? You could have fooled me. It sure does feel like summer; not here in Chautauqua County or many other places through the U.S this year.
For the past month, and for that matter, the better part of this year, the U.S has been plagued with a slue of servere weather storms, which has so far rendered Summer 'null and void'. Chautauqua County experienced one of it worst winters in quite last decade and as for Spring, well, lets say it has been COLD and WET.
Locals often joke about Chautauqua County only having two months of warm weather. However this year i might be cut to only six weeks or less. Weather forecasts for Western New York predict another cold and wet holiday weekend. July 4th, the biggest holiday weekend in Chautauqua County with single-day revenues for restaurants, sporting activity shops, marinas and grocery sales often hitting their highest peak, it is expected to be gloomy and filled with scattered showers.
So where is summer? Well, luckily for the residents of this unique community in Western New York, 'summer' is right around the corner. Even if the summer weather is not the most kind this year, Saturday June 27th still commemorated the 135th year of the Chautauqua Institution. Come rain or shine, it will offer a wide range of educational activities to an average of 7,500 people, in residence on any particular day during the season, and another 145,000 during the season attend public events, including popular entertainment, theater, symphony, ballet and opera.
So wheather you have to down a umbrella, a light sweater or raincoat for a few more weeks, or can leave the windows open for a few more spring chill breezes, you can rest assured that summer IS coming!!
