The Chautauqua Institution, founded in 1874 by inventor Lewis Miller and John Heyl Vincent, was started based on the advancement of education and the preservation of the arts. Since its beginning, it has continued to flourish into its current state as a beacon of culture and transcendental beauty for the Western New York region. It has been visited by every president from Ulysses S. Grant to Bill Clinton, and has been the residence for many famous artists and lecturers from George Gershwin to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Institution is filled with activities for all ages, from classes in writing or dance, to kayak, sailboat, and bicycle rentals. Visitors have no trouble in fulfilling their wishes, whether it's a busy family looking to have some fun on the lake, or an older couple wanting a relaxing vacation filled with nothing more than good food, good music, and a good book. You can enjoy some entertainment in the 5,000 seat amphitheater which features symphonies, daily lectures, and concerts ranging from Creedance Clearwater Revival to the Beach Boys. If you're looking for a quite afternoon instead, try one of the many parks and reading gardens that are scattered throughout the grounds. It truly is a perfect place to leave the driving to a minimum in order to better enjoy the architecture, foliage, and friendly faces.
You can sit down for some fine dining at the Season Ticket or get an ice cream cone at the Refectory across the grass. Grab a ride on a tram or take a walk across Thunder Bridge. No matter what you decide on you can't go wrong. As long as you're in Chautauqua you'll be surrounded by the ambiance that defines it, yet remains undefinable.
